Joost…I think

October 29th, 2007

We use Joost a lot at home for TV. The content could be updated quicker and because we’re in Canada some of the content is filtered. I tried to show someone at work all of the new channels and got the following error.

Joost Crash

Now…I’m pretty sure it was Joost that crashed…

uhhhhh…..Tostabags!

October 25th, 2007

Tosta Bags

This is just kinda weird….basically they are bags that you put in your toaster to create the ‘authentic British Sandwich’, or toast pizzas, pitas etc…in…a…toaster……Now I don’t know about you…..shoving a pizza in my toaster would be like shoving my cat in a shoe box, it’s not really going to work..and I don’t see why I just wouldn’t use the oven….or get this crazy idea a ‘Toaster Oven’

But for those crazy chefs out there…check it out

Pumpkin Carving Templates

October 11th, 2007

Free Gear

October 11th, 2007

This is a neat idea…a guy is giving away his old tech gear to a random commenter. Every time a post reaches 100 comments he randomly picks a winner…and you guessed it…you get his old gear…

The Slinky Antenna

October 10th, 2007

So one of the Days of Deals sales from Dell was a 32″ LCD TV for $549…and well I couldn’t say no and jumped on the flat screen wagon. A couple of days later it arrived at work and of course must be fully tested….. It comes with a built-in ATSC tuner allowing for receiving HD programming OTA.

This required us to get a bit creative in coming up with a suitable antenna to test the reception.

The following components were used:

  • A Paper Clip
  • A Slinky
  • A Trolley

Unfortunately we didn’t get any signal for CBC-HD, but we were able to tune into some Maury Povich where the topic of the day was “My mom is too fat to dress so sexy”…oh yeah…that’s right kids!

Anyways here are a few shots of the slinky antenna

Linux Driver Project

September 28th, 2007

One of the pains of running *nix is finding drivers for your hardware. Getting the correct drivers can be quite elusive and can require compiling your own libraries, for wireless cards using the ndiswrapper or just plain sitting there swearing at the vendor.

The Linux Driver Project aims at developing and supporting Linux drivers. And with a recent announcement from the creator, his company Novel has changed his position to allow him to work on the project full time.

Hopefully this will increase the number of supported devices and that vendors will start to see the benefit in supporting this user base.

L.A.S.E.R. Tag

September 28th, 2007

GRL (Graffiti Research Lab) is a group dedicated to ‘outfitting graffiti writers, artists and protesters with open source tools for urban communication.’ They do some pretty cool stuff, one of my favorites is L.A.S.E.R. Tag…I’m thinking this would be a fun way to spend a Saturday night.
